Sequels to movies are either a hit or a miss, but I find that DreamWorks has a knack for making them a success. My favorite full length animated movies, Shrek and the original Madagascar come from this company. If you had caught a glimpse of me when I watched Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, you would have thought that I had regressed to being a 9 year old. Also, with eight ‘sobrinos’ under the age of ten, I have to be able to let their mothers know if they should take them to the movie.
In Madagascar 3, our usual suspects, Melman (voiced by David Schwimmer) , Alex (voiced by Ben Stiller), Gloria (voiced by Jada Pinkett Smith ) and Marty (voiced by Chris Rock) are trying to get back to their NYC Zoo, which is where they feel they belong. But things will not be easy , otherwise we would not have a movie! Once again our amigos are duped by the penguins. After Marty convinces Alex the penguins aren’t coming back, they develop their own plan to return to NYC. But they need to find the penguins first.
The crew finds their way to Monte Carlo, where the penguins and monkeys are having the time of their lives. They all cause such a commotion that it catches the attention of feared Captain Chantel DuBois (Frances McDormand), head of animal control and one who fancies herself as a scent hound. After barely escaping the clutches of Captain DuBois , they quite logically join the circus… where they are asked to demonstrate their acts, which are non-existent because they are zoo animals. So Alex reinvents himself as a pastel colored singing zebra with a rainbow afro wig. Once you sing his catchy tune a couple of times you will not be able to get it out of your head.
After the amusing complications de rigeur, and a trip around the world, Marty and crew finally arrive at their beloved Central Park Zoo. Unbeknownst to them, Captain DeBois arrives at the Zoo as well. This last confrontation with her seems never–ending until the tables are turned on her and she becomes the hero.
Madagascar 3 goes out with a grandisimo bang, which had all the children in the theater oohing and awing. With the credits on the screen the kids did not want to get up from their sits. Once over there was a huge applause and loud screaming from everyone; including me. I asked a couple of the kids what they thought of the movie and they said “awesome.” I could not have said it any better myself.
