The first Hispanic and third woman appointed to the United States Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor has become an instant American icon. Justice Sotomayor appears in the Winter Garden, located on the 9th floor.  Seating is available first come, first served and limited to Winter Garden capacity (500).  Reservations are not required.  Books are available for purchase at this event and Justice Sotomayor will autograph books at the conclusion of the program.

Let’s get the “good” out of the way, as there is much to say about this amazing film. If you are a fan of action/fantasy movies, THE HOBBIT easily takes the prize for “best of 2013.” You have dwarves, elves, goblins and dragons galore to tickle your eyes and imagination. Visually, THE HOBBIT is on par with the trilogy and takes Jackson’s art for creating a mystical world to a new level in 3D. From makeup to wardrobe to CGI effects, it will be a great surprise if THE HOBBIT doesn’t receive an Oscar nomination for those categories this year.

Without giving it away, you can not argue with the story (well you can, but more later). If this is your introduction to the world of Hobbits and rings, the plot does this well and if anything, you could argue that it moves too slow in the beginning. If you haven’t seen The LOTR Trilogy, don’t worry, while set in the same universe THE HOBBIT is the set-up to The LOTR and in my oppinion is an even better place to start.

As a film, THE HOBBIT is a gem that will satisfy all fans. If there is any “bad” to this movie it is an outcome of the decision to break the single novel into three separate films. I sat through the screening with two “die-hard” Tolkien fans. When it was over, they both had a nerd-out on the fact that several scenes were added that were not in the original work. After a 1/2 hour of debate (that I didn’t understand) I asked them if they “liked the movie?” They both said “yes it was excellent.”

In the end, THE HOBBIT is a superb film, but be prepared if you are, or take a die-hard fan for the criticism after the show. They’ll/you’ll love it, but will still complain, they wouldn’t be true fans if they didn’t.

PS: For those of you who have been wanting to finally see the Dragon Smaug, you will be disappointed. You only get a small glimpse of his eye at the end. Guess we have to wait another year.

In one of the dumbest statements of the year an East Haven, Connecticut Mayor respond to charges that police officers in his town harassed, abused and brought false charges against Latino residents: by telling a reporter that you might eat tacos to help Latinos out.

After four officers in his town were charged by the Justice Department for violating the civil rights of Latino residents, Mayor Joseph Maturo showed his support for the community by saying- “I might have tacos when I go home.”

Maturo  subsequently apologized for his “insensitive and stupid answer.”
